Mental Floss 163

The answer to last week’s challenge is, Q: An unknown number of left and right handed gloves have been thrown into a large sack. How many gloves will you have to take out of the sack to be absolutely certain that you will have two of the same type?

A: 2 or 3 gloves. If you remove two gloves, both could be the same or different. If different, a  third glove will have to match one of the first two gloves.

This week’s challenge is:

Q: A father gives his sons 30 bottles. Ten are full of gold dust, 10 are half full of gold dust and ten are empty. The bottles are sealed and the corks must not be removed or tampered with. How can each son get an equal amout of gold dust and an equal number of bottles? (Keep in mind that each full bottle weighs 1kg).

The answer along with a new challenge, next week.

Have an excellent weekend …
